Wedding Ceremony: A Beautiful Love Song

A Practical Resource for Pastors of Small Churches

A Note to Fellow Pastors

One of the joys of pastoral ministry is helping couples begin their married lives together. While the vows and commitments of a Christian wedding are sacred, I believe the ceremony should also reflect something of the couple’s personality and story.

I originally prepared this ceremony for a couple who shared a love of music. That gave me the opportunity to compare marriage to a beautiful love song—one with harmony, different verses, and a Composer who knows how the song should be written.

I’ve included the traditional elements of the ceremony along with the personal message I shared with the couple.

Feel free to adapt this ceremony to your own setting. But I would especially encourage you to get to know the couple and find a way to make the message personal. Sometimes one illustration drawn from their lives can make the ceremony unforgettable.

The Greeting

Dearly beloved:

We are gathered here today in the sight of God and in the presence of these witnesses to join together [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] in holy matrimony.

Marriage is an honorable estate, instituted by God at the beginning of creation.

Genesis 2:24 reminds us:

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

Our Lord Jesus Christ affirmed the sacredness of marriage and honored a wedding in Cana of Galilee with His presence and His first miracle.

The Apostle Paul also spoke of the importance of marriage and the responsibilities of husbands and wives.

Marriage, therefore, is not to be entered into lightly, but reverently, thoughtfully, and in the fear of God.

The Charge

[Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name], I charge you both, as you stand in the presence of God, to remember that the commitment of marriage is intended to last a lifetime.

It is God’s desire that your love and faithfulness endure through every season of life.

If the vows you exchange today are kept faithfully, and if you seek always to know and do the will of God, your lives will be blessed by His presence, and your home will be a place of peace.

The Commitment to Marriage

[Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name], marriage is a sacred covenant through which God can help couples grow in love, compassion, patience, and forgiveness.

Your lives can be enriched as you learn to care for one another. You have the opportunity to encourage each other’s dreams, strengthen each other through life’s difficulties, and demonstrate to the world the beauty of unconditional love.

But all of this is possible only as you allow God to remain at the center of your relationship.

Psalm 127:1 reminds us:

“Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”

God desires to make your home a place of acceptance, security, forgiveness, and grace.

My prayer is that His presence will guide you throughout your lives together.

Presentation of the Bride (Optional)

Who gives this woman to be married to this man?

[Response from parent or representative.]

Declaration of Intent

[Groom’s Name], will you have [Bride’s Name] to be your wife, to live together according to God’s ordinance in the holy estate of matrimony?

Will you love her, comfort her, honor and cherish her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, remain faithful to her as long as you both shall live?

If so, answer, “I do.”

[Bride’s Name], will you have [Groom’s Name] to be your husband, to live together according to God’s ordinance in the holy estate of matrimony?

Will you love him, comfort him, honor and cherish him, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, remain faithful to him as long as you both shall live?

If so, answer, “I do.”

The Wedding Message: A Beautiful Love Song

[Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name], what a joy it has been to get to know you.

For this particular couple, I used their shared love of music as the foundation for the wedding message. Pastors can adapt this illustration or develop one that reflects the couple they are marrying.

You both have a love for music, and who knows? Someday we may be buying tickets to hear you sing and play!

I believe you will make beautiful music together. More importantly, God desires to write a beautiful love song with your lives.

But there are a few things you need to understand for that to happen.

First, you won’t always be singing the same note.

It is only when a soprano sings a C and a bass sings a G that beautiful harmony can be accomplished.

Please respect and value each other’s individuality.

God doesn’t expect you always to agree. He also doesn’t want either of you to drown out the other.

He knew what He was doing when He brought you together.

Allow your different perspectives and personalities to complement one another so that together you can produce the beautiful harmony God desires for your marriage.

Second, a beautiful love song has many verses.

The first verse is often romantic and dreamy. And in many ways, that’s where you are today.

But sometimes the second and third verses introduce conflict, uncertainty, and disappointment.

No doubt, at some point, you will experience seasons like that.

But please don’t stop singing the song.

If you remain faithful to God and to one another, you may discover that the later verses become the most meaningful and sacred.

It is often after you’ve walked through the valleys together that your love becomes stronger and deeper.

There are many verses to this song. Try to appreciate each one.

Finally, remember who is writing the song.

Your friends and family may give you wonderful advice, and you should be grateful for their wisdom.

But ultimately, it is God, speaking through His Word and His Spirit, who must direct the melody of your marriage.

As long as you continue to allow Him to guide your lives and make you more like His Son, you will have a beautiful love song to share with the world.

Amen.

The Marriage Vows

The Groom’s Vows

[Groom’s Name], please repeat after me:

I, [Groom’s Name], take you, [Bride’s Name],

To be my wife,

To have and to hold,

From this day forward,

For better or for worse,

For richer or for poorer,

In sickness and in health,

To love and to cherish,

Until death do us part.

The Bride’s Vows

[Bride’s Name], please repeat after me:

I, [Bride’s Name], take you, [Groom’s Name],

To be my husband,

To have and to hold,

From this day forward,

For better or for worse,

For richer or for poorer,

In sickness and in health,

To love and to cherish,

Until death do us part.

The Exchange of Rings

Do you have rings as tokens of your love for one another?

Wedding rings are lasting symbols of the vows and commitments made on this wonderful occasion.

The ring is an unbroken circle. It has no beginning and no end. It reminds us of the enduring nature of the love you have promised to one another.

Traditionally, wedding rings are made of precious metals that are intended to endure for many years.

Our prayer is that these rings will symbolize your lasting love and faithfulness.

May your love endure through every season of life.

Let us pray.

Prayer Over the Rings

Heavenly Father, we ask Your blessing upon these rings. May their unbroken circles remind [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] each day of Your endless love and of the promises they have made to one another.

May these rings be constant reminders of the covenant they have entered into today.

Amen.

The Groom’s Ring Vow

[Groom’s Name], please repeat after me:

This ring I give you,

As a token of my love,

And as a pledge

Of my constant faithfulness.

The Bride’s Ring Vow

[Bride’s Name], please repeat after me:

This ring I give you,

As a token of my love,

And as a pledge

Of my constant faithfulness.

Optional Ceremony: The Unity Candle

Couples may choose a unity candle or a sand ceremony. Both are optional.

At this time, [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] will light the unity candle.

The two outside candles represent the faith, wisdom, and love they have received from their parents and families throughout their lives.

Today they light the center candle to symbolize that they are joining their lives together as one.

From this day forward, they will share life’s joys and sorrows, encourage one another through difficulties, and walk together in love and faithfulness.

[The couple lights the unity candle.]

Optional Ceremony: The Sand Ceremony

Today, [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] will symbolize their marriage through the pouring of two individual containers of sand.

Each container represents a separate life, a separate family, and the experiences that have shaped the individuals they are today.

As the sand is poured into one container, the grains become joined together.

Just as these grains cannot easily be separated and returned to their original containers, so these two lives are now joined together in the covenant of marriage.

May this be a lasting reminder of the promises they have made today.

[The couple pours the sand into the shared container.]

Prayer of Blessing

Almighty God, we are so grateful that You have brought [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] together.

We thank You for being present with us during this ceremony.

Heavenly Father, we ask You to bless their marriage.

We acknowledge that for them to have a loving and successful marriage, they will need Your help.

Remind them that You are love, and that to love each other as they should, they need Your presence in their lives.

May Your Spirit abide in their hearts.

May their home be a place of truth, security, forgiveness, and love.

May their lives be an example of concern and service to others.

And may those of us who have witnessed these vows find our own relationships strengthened and our commitments renewed.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Declaration of Marriage

Since [Groom’s Name] and [Bride’s Name] have made this solemn covenant of marriage before God and before these witnesses, have pledged their vows to one another, and have confirmed those promises through the giving and receiving of rings, it is now my privilege, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, to declare you husband and wife.

You may kiss the bride.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to present to you:

Mr. and Mrs. [Couple’s Preferred Name]

A Final Thought for Pastors

Every wedding is different because every couple is different.

I encourage pastors to spend time getting to know the couple before the ceremony. Find out what brought them together, what they appreciate about each other, and what interests or experiences they share.

Then look for a way to connect their story to the biblical principles of marriage.

For this particular couple, music provided a natural illustration. For another couple, it might be sports, travel, friendship, or something entirely different.

The important thing is that the ceremony honors God, communicates the sacredness of marriage, and reminds the couple of the promises they are making.

A wedding ceremony should be more than something a pastor performs. It should be a meaningful moment of ministry to a couple beginning their lives together.
