Baby Dedication Ceremony

Baby Dedication Ceremony

A Practical Resource for Pastors of Small Churches

A Note to Fellow Pastors

One of the great privileges of pastoral ministry is dedicating children to the Lord. Over the years, I have found that these moments are meaningful not only to the parents but also to the entire congregation.

The following is an example of a baby dedication service I recently conducted. Feel free to adapt it to your own congregation and the family you are serving. I encourage you to make the ceremony personal, reminding the parents of God’s love for their child and the responsibility and privilege of raising that child to know Jesus.

Opening Remarks

Today we celebrate one of God’s greatest gifts—a child.

Children remind us that life is sacred, hope is alive, and the future is worth investing in.

While we do not believe that this dedication saves a child, it is a beautiful opportunity for parents to publicly declare, “We want to raise our child to know and love Jesus Christ.”

It is also a reminder to all of us that no family is meant to raise a child alone. As the church, we commit ourselves to walk beside them with our prayers, encouragement, and example.

Today we are not dedicating this child because we believe God needs convincing to love this little one. We are dedicating this child because God already loves them, and these parents are responding by offering their child back to the One who gave them life.

We are also continuing the practice of bringing children to Jesus for His blessing, as recorded in Matthew 19:13–15. Listen to this Scripture.

Scripture Reading — Matthew 19:13–15 (NIV)

“Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.

Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’

When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.”

Commitment of the Parents

[Parents’ names], in presenting [child’s name] for dedication, you signify not only your faith in Jesus Christ but also your desire that your child may know and follow the will of God, may live and die a Christian, and come unto everlasting blessedness.

In order to attain this holy end, do you promise, by God’s grace:

  • To provide a loving home where Christ is honored;
  • To teach [child’s name] the Scriptures;
  • To pray with your child and for your child;
  • To encourage your child in the life of the church;
  • And to model a genuine Christian faith so that one day your child may freely choose to follow Jesus Christ as Lord?

If so, answer, “I will.”

Commitment of the Congregation

Church family, will you pray faithfully for this child, encourage these parents, provide a Christlike example, and do all you can to help this child come to know and follow Jesus Christ?

If so, answer, “We will.”

Personal Words to the Parents

[Parents’ names], you’ve already demonstrated the kind of love and care that every child deserves.

[Include a personal observation about the parents, their family, or their love for this child.]

But even more than that, our prayer is that [child’s name] will grow up knowing the love of Jesus because your child saw it first in your home.

Today you are acknowledging that while God has entrusted this child to your care, your child ultimately belongs to the Lord.

My prayer is that years from now, [child’s name] will look back and thank God for parents who pointed the way to Jesus every day.

Let’s pray.

Prayer of Dedication

Lord, surround [child’s name] with people who will love this child well.

Protect [him/her] physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Give [him/her] a tender heart that responds to Your voice.

May [child’s name] come to know Jesus at an early age, discover the gifts You have placed within [him/her], and spend [his/her] life bringing glory to Your name.

Strengthen these parents with patience on difficult days, wisdom in every decision, and joy as they watch their child grow.

May this home always be filled with Your peace and Your presence.

[Child’s name], may the Lord bless you and keep you all the days of your life.

Amen.

Closing Words to the Congregation

Church family, this is one of the newest members of our church family.

Let’s commit ourselves to praying for this child—not just today, but for many years to come.

A Final Thought for Pastors

I encourage you to personalize every baby dedication. Learn something about the family. If they have other children, acknowledge them. Share a personal observation that will make the ceremony meaningful.

A baby dedication is more than a few minutes in a worship service. It is an opportunity to remind parents of their sacred responsibility, encourage a family, and invite the entire congregation to participate in the spiritual development of a child.

Years from now, the family may not remember every word you said, but they will remember that their church celebrated their child and prayed for their family.
